Since 1998, The Greening has employed over 500 Detroit youth through its Green Corps program to help our community partners maintain hundreds of planting sites citywide. The Green Corps project is one of only a few programs in the city of Detroit that offers gainful summer employment to youth, while providing teens a solid education in urban ecology and the environment, valuable job skills, an understanding of philanthropy, individual responsibility, and youth leadership training.
Corps members receive training, instruction and expert supervision as they engage in the business of enhancing the environment in our neighborhoods. The benefits of the Green Corps project for Detroit's youth community are numerous. Beyond the paycheck, team members receive a solid education in the basics of urban forestry, and valuable training in arboriculture and landscape maintenance, training that translates directly into jobs after graduation. Further, team members take away a feeling of accomplishment and of pride in themselves for helping their neighborhoods.
In 2007, the Green Corps Program expanded to incorporate adults, providing more Detroiters with meaningful employment revitalizing Detroit's neighborhoods. Through this expanded Green Corps Employment program, we provide Detroiters of all ages with on-the-job training in the Green Industry, including hands-on experience at The Greening's large-scale restoration plantings, tree nursery program and vacant lot cleaning and reclamation programs.
