The Planting Program is The Greening's primary method for reaching out to the community and mobilizing volunteers to green neighborhoods citywide. The Greening and over 1,500 volunteers each year, host planting projects to revitalize public spaces in Detroit, Hamtramck, and Highland Park. From peas to trees, if it's green our planting program can help your neighborhood plant it.
For each project, we work with our community partner to coordinate all aspects of the planting, including selection of an appropriate date, recruiting community volunteers and volunteer training. On planting day, usually a Saturday morning from 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m., the community group and volunteers join together and get to work. The Greening provides all the equipment and support necessary to complete the planting including shovels, pick axes, rakes and brooms. Participants attend a planting demonstration at the start of the day and planting specialists are on hand to ensure proper planting techniques are used. Then the volunteers roll up their sleeves and dig in!
Once the planting is complete, The Greening provides the community group with directions on how to maintain their planting sites and extra volunteer assistance whenever necessary.
