Mmm… Caffeine

Caffeine

Even with the splash Bing made upon its release, Google still dominates the search market, with Nielsen ratings showing a 65% share of searches as of April 2010. But, the best defense is a good offense, and Google has started showing off some of that offense in the form of their revamped search algorithm, code-named “Caffeine.” Based on the name alone, Media Genesis can be considered fans.

What’s changed? Well, it’s faster, crawls more of the web, and is probably more accurate. This accuracy is of course desirable, but it also brings up the question, at least to people in the web business: what does “accurate” mean? How will this affect search engine optimization?

The real answer is, of course, still up in the air, but preliminary analysis reinforces something we’ve known for a while. Real good, relevant content will rule the day. Also important is a social media presence, since Google has put an emphasis on social media in Caffeine, and updating your site regularly. Guess what does both at once? An integrated Twitter feed! Or any number of options, really. The takeaway here is to stay open to innovative ideas for SEO. And check this space often. Especially the second one.

Clown College Coming to Michigan

Ant1Clown

Troy, Michigan / April 1, 2010

Today convicted worm cheese smuggler and Michigan entrepreneur, Antoine Dubeauclard, announced that he would be re-purposing the 40,000 square-foot facilities that currently houses his website development firm. Dubeauclard, who was arrested this time last year <http://mediag.com/news/tag/smelly-cheese/> for smuggling over 60 pounds of Casu Marzu into the states, has declared that the large black building that stands at the corners of Stephenson Highway and E. Maple Road will henceforth be home to the largest clown college in North America.

Plans to remove the roof and replace it with a big top will get underway this evening.

“We aren’t going for the striped tent top just to draw attention to the new business,” Dubeauclard commented, as he adjusted his top hat. “Really fitting a trapeze and elephants on the top floor would have been difficult without the additional height.”

Antoine Dubeauclard deported to France for alleged role in cheese smuggling operation

Antoine Mug Shot

Update: One year later, Debeauclard is at it again! read more:

A Troy businessman was arrested today when police discovered him participating in an alleged illegal cheese exchange.  Antoine Dubeauclard, 35, of Royal Oak was arrested for possession of over 60 pounds of Casu Marzu (worm cheese).

Dubeauclard made an exchange with undercover officers for nearly $5,000 of the illegal dairy product, according to police reports. The French-born business owner fled the scene after the exchange, but officers were easily able to track the smell Dubeauclard had picked up after spending up to three weeks locked in a shipping container with his prized Casu Marzu. No tracking dogs were needed to trace the scent, officers said.

The alleged stinky cheese smuggler will be arraigned in district court Friday, at 2 p.m. Dubeauclard, who is the president of the Troy-based Internet firm Media Genesis, has a small and telling record of similar offenses.

In 2006 Dubeauclard was arrested in Ferndale for selling knock-off Teletubbies DVDs. The French characters in his movies were ironically named “smell”etubbies, and happened to be made from blocks of Casu Marzu.

In 1998 Dubeauclard was charged with loitering when his one-man street tribute to The New Kids on the Block was shut down after an incident outside of a Royal Oak nightclub. Allegedly, Dubeauclard was asked by the club’s bouncer to take his act to another store front. An altercation broke out. The one-time tribute artist told police his left fist was named Jordan and his right was named Donny, police reports said.

In 1997 the troubled entrepreneur was arrested for the first time, this time, for selling cologne without a permit. Dubeauclard was picked up from Somerset Mall in Troy, where he was selling his “Fred Durst” fragrance to young passers-by – mostly those in red hats. According to police, the scent was derived from Casu Marzu.

Casa Marzu is s a traditional Sardinian cheese made from sheep’s milk. It is known for being covered with live maggots.  Despite being illegal, it can be found through illegal channels in Italy.
Insect larvae are deliberately introduced to the cheese, promoting an advanced level of fermentation and breaking of fat. When disturbed, the larvae can sprint for distances up to 8 inches.

The Power of Your Reputation Goes Online

Search Google for the phrase “customer complaints” and the number of search results you will see is around 7 million. With websites like Complaints.com, My3Cents.com, and RipOffReport.com, it has become all too easy for disgruntled customers and ex-employees to blog away their problems with your products or services. How do you combat this for your own company? Be proactive, not reactive – start your online reputation management program before you have problems.

These websites make it incredibly easy for customers to leave feedback, so Media Genesis recommends that you start by monitoring as much of the consumer-generated content as you can. Search engines such as Google and Yahoo can send alerts that email you the latest relevant content of a particular phrase. And if you don’t have a search engine optimization strategy in place now, begin one! By creating and promoting the positive aspects of your company it makes it that much harder for negative content to surpass the positive. Optimize all digital content on your website, and review any presence you have on social networking sites such as Facebook, LinkedIn, and YouTube.

While implementing these practices can help, they are not a surefire way to avoid negative online attention. If that has been the case, the best policy is to resolve the issues, not ignore them. Even though it might be difficult at first, read these reviews and take these steps:

1. Is there merit in this feedback? Are you aware of the situation, or has it happened before?

a. If not, then provide the facts and ask for corrections

b. If yes, then be willing to listen and correct the situation

2. Be prepared with your reply to the complaint, whether you resolve the issue, or even simply acknowledge it

3. Be open and honest with your consumers, and truly listen to what they say. Customer Service 101: LISTEN

Media Genesis does not view negative feedback as simply an SEO problem; it has helped improve the customer service for some of the largest companies. Any visits to ComcastSucks.com, or “Dell Hell” will tell you that everyone goes through the process of learning how their customers really feel. By being proactive and putting your best foot forward first, you can help minimize the negative attacks. And don’t be surprised if you happen to find an angry customer online, just remember that very few situations are beyond repair and only need good communication.
