Planet of the Apps

“Contemporary life management tools” – This may seem like too serious of a title for a category of items which includes “Pet Salon” and “Zombie Farm” but mobile device apps have solidified their role in macromanaging the particulates comprising our daily lives (and, yes, that includes boredom).

From “How many grams of fat should I eat today?” to “Who is that actress that looks JUST like Dave’s girlfriend?” we have comprised a list of our favorites. Enjoy.

Producteev

This app is geared toward the organized people of the world, or people who would like to be organized. Producteev is a great app to keep track of your “to do” list(s).  A user is able to view their full list of tasks, see what tasks are due on the present day, determine the importance by rating tasks on a five star ranking system, view the “starred” items, view items that are late, and receive alerts when a task is due. Producteev is the ultimate app for task orientation.

DailyBurn

We know that our hours of programming, designing and overall strategizing don’t make for the most athletic body (we tend to run on coffee and Mt.Dew, after all).  For help, we turn to DailyBurn – an app with a web-based counterpart that lets us track how much we eat and how much we exercise (does drawing on a whiteboard count as an arm workout?).  It also provides us with graphs of weight, dietary and exercise progress. And let’s be honest, who doesn’t love graphs?

IMDB (Internet Movie Database)

For anyone who needs to find out what movies Jessica Alba has starred in, what roles Danny McBride (Kenny Powers of Eastbound and Down) has played in the movie industry, movie trivia, upcoming movies, status of production on a movie, or any information pertaining to television, this app is a life saver. This app also allows users to view movie trailers to upcoming movies or movies at the box office, or a movie released three years ago. The app makes it very easy to find what you are looking for pertaining to motion picture entertainment.

Mega Jump

Noted by many to be the next Angry Birds in terms of a cult following.  Users play as a tiny, bug eyed alien that jumps to soaring heights to collect coins, special, powers, and dodging enemies along the way. The game is addicting and extremely hard to put down once started; the 12 million jumpers who downloaded the app would agree with us. The more you play the more characters, levels and enemies you will encounter. Try it!

PBS

Because we love Art 21, Nova and Antique’s Roadshow. Because we’re all about increasing our depth of worldly knowledge and because we never know when we’ll be stuck in a long queue, we like the free PBS app.  Watch clips and full length videos from your mobile device, set reminders for new and interesting TV programs from PBS…or watch the Austin City Limits song performances. (That last one is from the App description.  We wouldn’t make something like that up.) This app is great to keep on (or in) hand.

There you have it. From our mobile devices to yours. Hope these recommendations help keep you entertained, fit, organized and informed.

All the best,
