Detroit Future City: 2019 Detroit Reinvestment Index

In late 2018, Media Genesis (MG) worked with Detroit Future City on two research publications: “Growing Detroit’s African-American Middle Class: The Opportunity for a Prosperous Detroit” and “139 Square Miles,” which were both immensely successful.

So, when Detroit Future City approached MG with a new print project – a publication of their 2019 Reinvestment Index Research – we immediately jumped on board.

Design

Media Genesis was responsible for creating all interior designs, graphs, and charts for the Reinvestment Index. Due to the sizable amount of information and research data provided, we needed to determine the best ways in which to visualize this while still matching the overall tone of the written content provided by Detroit Future City.

We began by mocking up sketches of how the charts and graphs might lay out, going back and forth internally and with Detroit Future City in order to improve legibility and formatting. We did this for a variety of different graph types, creating custom bar graphs, pie charts, tables, and line graphs.

Once the overall design of each chart and graph type had been finalized, we added color to further improve legibility and create a clear, strong eye line across each page.

Printing

Media Genesis was also responsible for organizing the printing of the finalized report books. We worked with Detroit Future City to select the ideal paper type for both the cover and the internal pages and finalized the remainder of the book design before sending it to the printer.

Having completed printing projects in the past, we utilized our relationships with local Metro Detroit printers to have the books printed and bound within a quick turnaround time in order to provide proofs for Detroit Future City to review.

Custom Webpage

In order to amplify the reach of “The 2019 Detroit Reinvestment Index: A Measure of Detroit’s Comeback,” we created a custom webpage on the Detroit Future City website that provides a virtual walkthrough of all the content that appears within the printed book.

The webpage follows the same color scheme as the physical print edition and utilizes the same graphs, charts, and images. A blue navigation bar on the right side of the screen allows the user to select the section of the content they would like to read. Users are also able to access reinvestment indexes from past years.

At Media Genesis, we’re proud – once again – to announce another successful project completion with Detroit Future City. With new projects always on the horizon, we’re eager to see where this partnership takes us next.
