Choosing Color: What does it say about you?

Color is a powerful tool in design. It creates a mood and evokes different responses in the viewer based how it’s used. Below is a list of colors and what they’re associated with in the western world (Europe and North America).

Please note that other regions and cultures of the world differ in their interpretation of what colors mean, so it is always important to be sensitive to this when designing for various markets.

  • Reds – Energy, passion, danger, power, sacrifice, stopping, excitement
  • Oranges – Happiness, confidence, creativity, strength, adventure
  • Yellows – Wisdom, hope, playfulness, satisfaction, optimism, cowardice, hazards
  • Greens – Health, regeneration, contentment, harmony, money, growth
  • Blues – Honesty, integrity, trustworthiness, professionalism
  • Violets – Royalty, mysticism, beauty, inspiration
