MG Party – Thanks to all our sponsors

The Roaring 2000’s was exactly that: ROARING. The 2009 Media Genesis summer extravaganza was a great success. Party goers enjoyed local brew from Atwater Brewing Company and appetizers served by the Whitney staff. The weather was wonderful for ringing in our 13th year in business.

New technology creates new security threats

newtechnology

It used to be that someone stealing your internet for a free connection was all you had to worry about when it came to protecting your computer. Then, stealing data become the popular thing to do. Now, attackers are even able to maliciously modify data. All of a sudden someone using your internet connection for free seems just a little silly compared to someone changing an electronic medication order on a hospital network and killing patients. Just as technology has become more advanced and efficient, so have the people who want to get a hold of that sensitive information.

Small business tool to tuck under your belt

SmallBizTool

Founded in early 2009, Getlisted.org is a tool for tracking businesses online across the major local search engine platforms Google, Yahoo!, MSN Live Search and Best of the Web. This tool allows users to search and immediately find your business location and information in a local search listing, lending your business more credibility than one that isn’t listed anywhere.

Even if you don’t have a current website or you’re in the process of redesigning it, you can list your business online if you have an email address. This is a good way to gain visibility without committing to a particular brand identity.

How to handle name-squatting on social networks

Name-squatting has been a sneaky and shameful practice that has existed with Web domains as long as they have been around. This is when individuals or third parties purchase random domain names in hopes that somebody will want to purchase them someday. If that actually happens, then they will ask for up to $3,500 or more for a domain name that usually sells for $10. Although this can be obnoxious or annoying, there are ways around it, especially with trademarked names. Social media websites, however, are a different story.

A Eulogy for IE6

Eulogy for Internet Explorer 6

The time has come. The time is now. Internet Explorer 6, will you please go now?!

Much like Dr. Suess’s beloved Marvin K. Mooney, it is getting to be about time that IE6 went. It will be a solemn passing of once a mega-browser whose life has spanned much longer than we could ever imagine.

It seems like just yesterday that IE6 came packaged with Windows XP. It was a savior. It was newer, faster and prettier. Who didn’t love that default “Luna” theme that came with a shiny new install of XP? It wasn’t just good looks and that little extra zip that made IE6 great. At the time DHTML enhancements, content restricted inline frames, a fancy media bar, Windows Messenger integration and automatic image resizing made IE6 the darling of web. Well, until 2003 that is.
