Operating Engineers 324 (OE324): From Paper to Portal For Digital Self-Service
Operating Engineers 324 (OE324) represents thousands of Michigan-based members in skilled trades and heavy equipment operation. In 2024, they partnered with Media Genesis to bring a long-overdue upgrade to a critical member service: enabling union members to digitally manage their skills records and certifications—previously a paper-based process.
The Challenge
Until this project, OE324 members had no way to update their skills cards online. Instead, updates were submitted by phone or mail, then manually entered by union staff into the JayStar/PRISIM member management system. This bottleneck not only burdened staff but also slowed down the job dispatching process, which relies on accurate skill records.
OE324 needed a mobile-first, secure, and user-friendly interface that would let members:
- View and update their individual skill set
- Review their certifications (read-only)
- Rely on a system that reflects real-time PRIZM data
And because this was the first time members would have direct access to their records, the look, feel, and usability were critical to member trust and adoption.
The Approach
Media Genesis designed and developed a secure member portal experience directly within the OE324 website. We built the new Skills Card function to integrate seamlessly with the JayStar/PRIZIM platform via API, allowing users to see their live records and make skill updates directly.
Key features included:
- Two-factor authenticated (2FA) access to validate sessions before any data display
- Checkbox-style interaction for members to update their skill sets with a single tap or click
- Mobile-first UI design to support OE324’s on-the-go member base
- Read-only certification visibility, synced directly from the JATF training system via API
- Backend validation and secure submission logic to ensure data integrity

The Outcome
For the first time, OE324 members now have digital access and control over their skill records—eliminating phone calls, paperwork, and delays. The new interface respects both the technical complexity of the backend systems and the need for simplicity on the frontend. As a result, members experience a smoother, faster, and more empowering interaction with their union services.

Why It Matters
This project is more than a digital convenience—it’s a transformation of how OE324 supports its members. By giving skilled tradespeople direct access to their professional records, Media Genesis helped OE324 modernize operations and put valuable tools directly into the hands of its members.
